"Why do you find it so hard to believe?"
"Why do you find it so easy!"
"It's never been easy!"
"It's never been easy!"
Jack listened while Locke told him they needed him to be a leader. Told him that he was the one that would have to fight to keep them together, keep them alive.
He listened when Jacob told him he was special, when he told him he had what it takes.
He listened. But Jack didn't believe them.
So he smashed the mirrors, and now left flaws in his own reflection - shattering his already cracked and broken past. And he didn't feel special.
So he left them. He couldn't be their leader - not anymore - so he walked away.
And when he met Locke again (but Locke was dead?) he realized it was never about him. It was never really about any of them.
So when Locke told him he had to die he accepted it.
He listened.
He realized this was his destiny all along. He was the islands pawn, they all were. Living for a higher power, for the greater good.
They didn't matter in the grand scheme of things.
So he listened to the static building in the distance; watched it approaching him, saw the sky turn dark as the black smoke began to embrace him.
The white light.
And only then did he believe.
